The fate of Madison Square Garden hangs in the balance as Amtrak narrows down the competition for the Penn Station overhaul project. The three finalists present contrasting visions for the iconic arena's future.

The question of whether to move or stay put has been a topic of debate for Madison Square Garden, located beneath the bustling Penn Station. Amtrak, the national railroad, has announced that three consortia will compete for a lucrative contract to rebuild and manage this transit hub, known for its dreary atmosphere and complex layout. This development comes after President Donald Trump took control of the long-stalled project from the MTA and handed it over to Amtrak, the station's owner.

While the federal government hasn't disclosed the specifics of the proposals, two finalists have revealed their plans. One proposal suggests relocating Madison Square Garden across Seventh Avenue to create a new, well-lit train station. In contrast, another plan aims to keep the arena in its current location, focusing on improving navigation through new entrances and windows.

The proposal to move Madison Square Garden is championed by Grand Penn Partners, a group backed by the conservative National Civic Art Society and supported by Thomas Klingenstein, a prominent Trump donor. They advocate for a neoclassical architectural style, incorporating Greco-Roman columns and marble, with the slogan 'Make America Beautiful Again'. Macquarie, an Australian investment bank, provides the financial backing for this vision.

Justin Shubow, president of the National Civic Art Society, expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of Macquarie's support and the realization of their long-standing campaign for a new classical station.

On the other hand, Halmar International's proposal aims to keep MSG in place while renovating Penn Station and the arena's dome without expanding its services. The third finalist, Penn Forward Now, is a consortium of major developers, including Tutor, Parsons, and ARUP, whose design proposal remains under wraps.

The DOT has appointed Andy Byford, a former New York City Transit President, to lead the redevelopment, setting an ambitious goal of breaking ground by 2027. The arena's operating permit is set to expire in 2028, adding a sense of urgency to the project's timeline.
