Scarlets' Champions Cup Hopes Alive! | Rugby Analysis & Preview (2026)

Scarlets Keep Hope Alive in Investec Champions Cup Despite Defeat

Even after facing a third consecutive defeat in their Champions Cup journey, the Scarlets are still in contention for a chance to advance to the European knockout stages.

In a thrilling match on Saturday, the Scarlets fell to Pau with a score of 47-38. However, this loss earned them a second crucial losing bonus point, which may play a vital role in the outcomes of Pool 4.

Next weekend will see the final round of pool matches, where the top four teams will secure their spots in the last 16 of the Champions Cup. Meanwhile, those finishing in fifth place will move down to compete in the Challenge Cup at the same stage.

Although Scarlets still have a mathematical chance to break into the top four, they face a challenging road ahead. They must achieve a bonus-point win against Northampton Saints, who are currently leading the English Premiership, and simultaneously hope that Pau stumbles against the Bulls.

Realistically, aiming for fifth place appears to be a more attainable goal for Dwayne Peel's team as they gear up to meet Northampton next Sunday, January 18, at 15:15 GMT.

"Naturally, it’s disappointing to lose, but I noticed some positive aspects in our performance compared to the last two games," Peel remarked following the match against Pau. "We still have a clear opportunity to aim for fifth place.

"The Bulls will be traveling, just as we will be heading to Franklin's Gardens, which is an outstanding venue for rugby; I’ve played there myself. We’re up against a quality team, so it’s a significant challenge ahead, but we're still in contention, and that’s what truly matters—having something to strive for."

The Scarlets marked their return to the elite level of European competition with a narrow one-point defeat to Bristol Bears, who, like Saints, are currently performing exceptionally well in the league. Following that, they faced off against the formidable French side Bordeaux-Begles. Although they were outmatched, the Scarlets showcased their resilience against the reigning champions, who boast stars such as Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey.

In their latest encounter, Pau sent a reserve squad to Parc y Scarlets but demonstrated their prowess with a clinical seven-try performance, solidifying their position as second in the Top 14.

Reflecting on the overall campaign, Peel noted, "We've engaged in three high-quality matches within this competition, proving that we can compete at this level. Perhaps one day, a fortunate bounce or a favorable TMO decision could shift momentum in our favor. Until then, we remain committed to working hard and pushing forward.

"Saints present a formidable attacking threat, and conceding around 40 points is certainly a concern for us. Our focus has to be on seizing opportunities when they arise; leaving points on the table next week could severely impact our chances, so that’s of utmost importance."

But here's where it gets controversial... Can the Scarlets really turn their fortunes around against a powerhouse like Northampton? And with the stakes so high, how do you think they can best capitalize on their opportunities? Share your thoughts below!
