IPL 2026 at Chinnaswamy: Will Bengaluru Hosts the Big Games? (2026)

Is Bengaluru's beloved Chinnaswamy Stadium truly ready for IPL action? The answer is a surprising 'not yet!'

While the Karnataka government has given the green light for the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches to be held at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium, the situation is far from a done deal. It appears there's a bit of a tug-of-war happening behind the scenes involving three key players: the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the state government itself.

A top official from the KSCA, when asked about the clarity of the situation, cryptically suggested, "You have to speak to RCB." This hints at an ongoing discussion and perhaps some unresolved details. The KSCA has indeed secured the government's permission to host the IPL matches, and they assure that all necessary renovation and safety enhancement works are actively in progress and are expected to be completed on schedule.

Just recently, when the KSCA announced Hubballi as a venue for the Ranji Trophy, they detailed the extensive upgrades happening at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. These improvements are being made in accordance with recommendations from an Expert Committee and other statutory bodies. We're talking about significant work like dismantling, widening, and enhancing several spectator gates and access points, alongside other crucial infrastructure improvements. The KSCA anticipates these works will be wrapped up by the end of this month.

But here's where it gets controversial... The RCB franchise, especially after the unfortunate events of June 4, 2025, is reportedly seeking unconditional clearance to host matches, rather than just a conditional approval. This is a crucial distinction! To be prepared, they've even scouted Raipur and are considering the possibility of holding games at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Chhattisgarh's capital.

Adding to the general uncertainty, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still holding back on releasing the IPL 2026 schedule. This delay is largely due to the pending announcement of election dates in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, as the BCCI typically plans the IPL calendar around these electoral timelines. The unresolved status of the Chinnaswamy Stadium's readiness has only compounded this delay.

And this is the part most people miss... In a somewhat parallel scenario, the Rajasthan Royals have also approached their state government for a similar arrangement. They are seeking indemnity from the state government to host their matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Their request, as noted in a document submitted to the BCCI and the state government, highlights a need for protection: "Given the identified and compliance risks, any decision by the BCCI for RR to host matches at SMS Stadium should be subject to a formal indemnity from the state or stadium authority, protecting RR from liability arising from structural, life-safety, electrical or public safety failures beyond our operational control."

Interestingly, a report by Cricbuzz on February 11th mentioned the likelihood of the Rajasthan Royals playing four of their seven home games in Jaipur, following an intervention from the Rajasthan State Government. The IPL is currently slated to kick off on March 26th.

So, what do you think? Should franchises be held responsible for stadium infrastructure issues beyond their direct control, or is seeking such indemnity a necessary safeguard? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
